There are a variety of orbital problems that may or may not necessitate surgery. Consultation is advised to help diagnose and treat any condition affecting the eye socket.
The orbit is the cone shaped structure surrounding the eyeball consisting of its bony walls, fat, eye muscles, and nerves.
There can be a variety of orbital issues affecting patients. They commonly include orbital tumors or cysts, orbital fractures, and thyroid eye disease. Each case is unique and needs to be evaluated by a specialist to determine the best management options. Not all cases necessitate surgical intervention. Some can be medically managed. A thorough clinical exam and review of the imaging will be necessary to determine the course of action in most cases.
Surgery is usually indicated when the condition affects vision and/or is progressing and will lead to vision changes if nothing is done. Other cases that usually require surgery are malignant in nature and those causing significant pain. If there are medical options to address the problem then they are usually attempted first and surgery is a last resort.
Thyroid eye disease can be medically managed in most cases. Smaller orbital fractures not causing vision changes can usually be observed. Small benign orbital masses or tumors or cysts can also be observed. Some forms of malignancy such as lymphoma can be treated effectively with chemotherapeutic agents and/or radiation. The best management techniques designed to treat your particular case will be discussed during your consult.
