There are many different types of fillers designed to add volume back to depleted areas. Hyaluronic acid is the most natural type since hyaluronic acid is normally found in our skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be cross-linked differently affecting their properties. These properties make them more or less suitable for particular areas of the face such as the tear trough under eyes, the cheeks, and/or the marionette lines.
Commonly injected areas include the tear trough area under the eyes, the cheeks, the nasolabial folds, the marionette lines, the perioral lines, the lips, and the temples. Depending on the particular areas addressed, injections vary in terms of how deeply they are injected. The amount and type of hyaluronic acid filler needed varies among patients. Details will be provided during your consult.
Other than being the most natural substance used as a filler, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed by injecting specific enzymes. While this procedure is rarely necessary, it is nice to know there are options for patients that may not like the effects. Furthermore, other less natural fillers have been known to cause reactions by the body’s natural immune system.
Hyaluronic acid fillers usually come mixed with numbing agents; however, topical compounded numbing cream is always applied prior to any injection to minimize discomfort. Most patients tolerate it very well.
Filler injections are designed to soften the deeper hollows, lines, and wrinkles in the face. While it may not completely eliminate every line or wrinkle, it will minimize them. You can expect to appear more youthful in a natural way.
Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last around 6-12 months. We have patients coming in every few months to once/year to maintain the filler effects with repeat injections.
