Botox is a toxin derived from Botulinum bacteria that is used to temporarily paralyze muscles to minimize wrinkles cosmetically and spasms medically. It is FDA approved and was originally used to treat eye conditions. Its applications have dramatically expanded over the years. It is generally a very safe, well tolerated, and effective maintenance treatment.
Botox is used to treat a variety of different conditions whether aesthetic or functional in nature. As an oculofacial specialist extensively trained and experienced in treating facial muscles, I see patients for cosmetic injections to relieve the vertical lines and wrinkles between the brows, forehead furrows, and crow’s feet in the outer eyelid region. I also have many patients needing injections for chronic eyelid and facial spastic conditions. Botox, if injected correctly, is highly effective for both aesthetic and medical reasons and patients return eagerly for more injections at intervals of 3-6 months to maintain its gratifying effects.
You can expect a natural yet refreshed appearance approximately 1 week after your Botox treatment. It works best on the dynamic lines caused by facial muscle contractions in between the brows, in the forehead, and the outer eyelid region. When maintained over time, it can significantly reduce the development of deeper, static wrinkles that may need fillers to soften. Expect the effects of your Botox injection to last anywhere from 3-6 months. After this period of time, the injected muscles will go back to functioning fully as they did before, and the injections will have to be repeated to achieve similar effects. The amount of Botox and areas injected will be documented and adjusted as needed over time to achieve and maintain your desired results.
